CHANGE TO THE FLAT-RATE HEAVY VEHICLE CHARGE IN SWITZERLAND

This has changed for you.

All motorhomes that are not directly registered in Switzerland and have a total weight of over 3.5 tonnes must pay a so-called lump-sum heavy vehicle charge in Switzerland. This is required for driving on the entire public road network (regardless of motorways). Even if the motorhome is not being moved and is parked on a campsite, for example. The amount of the tax depends on the total weight of the motorhome as stated in the vehicle registration document.

Payment of the flat-rate heavy vehicle charge

Previously, you could pay the flat-rate amount via the Via app. However, this was shut down on 1 January 2025. The existing web portal is now available as a replacement. The flat-rate can also be paid directly at manned border crossings.

The vehicle can be registered for payment via the Via Portal web application. You will receive an e-mail as proof. If you pay in advance via the Via Portal, the waiting time at the border is also reduced.
There are three ways to book the flat-rate in terms of duration:

  • for 1 to 30 consecutive days
  • for 1 to 11 consecutive months
  • for 1 year

Before the Via app was switched off, there was still the option of booking 10 individual days, which was particularly popular with travellers passing through. There is no alternative for this option in the web application.
