Spring is just around the corner and the anticipation of a great summer holiday in a motorhome is growing all the time. However, there are a few things to bear in mind when travelling to other countries with a motorhome. In the following report, you can find out which tips you should follow, especially for longer journeys/stays.
Route planning:
In most cases, "less is more". Many inexperienced campers plan their route far too tightly when planning their holiday, as they want to get to their destination as quickly as possible. However, camping also includes the spontaneity to take a short break at a beautiful place or lake and cook lunch there, enjoy a small snack or go for a walk. After all, when camping, "The journey is the reward" (Confucius).
Motorhome loading:
Loading the motorhome is always a tricky business. It is not only the load, but also the possible payload that is important. It is also important to know the unladen weight of the vehicle so that you know how much weight can still be added without exceeding the maximum authorised mass. Exceeding this limit can quickly become expensive.
Here are tips on how to load your motorhome in the most favourable way:
- Only fill the water tank 1/3 full. This can save a lot of weight and also a lot of fuel, especially on longer journeys. A water tank holds approx. 150 to 235 litres. With 50 to 60 litres, there is still enough water available for the toilet and for washing hands.
- As a general rule, always load heavy items at the bottom and light items at the top so that the vehicle's centre of gravity is lower. As a result, the vehicle sways less and is also less susceptible when cornering.
Small change in the driver's cab:
It is always very useful to have some cash and, above all, small change in the driver's cabin of the motorhome, as tolls, parking fees and water always have to be paid. Cash is always a major advantage, especially at toll stations, as not all card types are always accepted here.
The right tool:
Something can always happen, especially on long journeys, as motorhomes are utility vehicles with many different uses. It is therefore important to always have the right tools in the vehicle. Of course, you don't need a whole toolbox, but cable ties, a multi-tool, gaffa tape and a small selection of screwdrivers and pliers are an advantage.
Longer stays:
If you want to be travelling in southern Europe over a longer period of time, especially in the cold months of the year, self-sufficiency plays an important role. This is because many campsites are often closed out of season. It is therefore particularly important to equip your motorhome self-sufficiently for such destinations. This is particularly possible with the Carthago chic e-line, chic s-plus and liner-for-two models. A self-sufficiency package is available for configuration, which offers you the opportunity to make your stay more flexible, comfortable and independent. The combination of efficient energy management, powerful battery systems and intelligent control solutions significantly increases self-sufficiency and reduces dependence on campsites and shore power.
