With the current weather forecasts, many motorhome owners can rejoice because spring is approaching. But before you can travel with your motorhome for the first time after winter, you should clean your vehicle and check some functionalities.
We have prepared a check list for you so that you can start your first holiday of the season without any worries.
HOW TO GET YOUR MOTORHOME READY FOR SPRING
Would you like to start travelling with your motorhome right at the beginning of spring?
Use the following overview to find out what work needs to be done after the winter. Then nothing will stand in the way of your next trip:
INTERIOR CLEANING
- Vacuum the vehicle completely once, wipe it with a damp cloth and check for mould.
- Vacuuming upholstery, mattresses and carpets.
TIP: In warm spring weather, these can also be aired out, but they should not get damp. - Clean the fronts and other surfaces with a wet cloth.
- Clean cupboards, furniture surfaces, kitchen and bathroom .
IMPORTANT: It is best to use diluted all-purpose cleaner and a microfibre cloth. Limescale residues in the kitchen or bathroom can be easily removed with suitable agents. Do not use scouring agents as they can damage veneered surfaces.
TIP: Leave windows and doors open during spring cleaning so that the moisture can escape. - Maintain and rub in the seals of the windows and doors in the interior with a care stick or talcum powder.
- Clean water pipes with a disinfectant / Check the water filter for leaks and their position (tightened).
TIP: To ensure that all green algae and bacteria have been removed, the rinse cycle should be repeated twice.
EXTERIOR CLEANING
- Remove dirt from the outside of the entire body.
IMPORTANT: Do not direct the water jet directly at seals and ventilation grilles. Only use suitable agents for cleaning the exterior. - Polishing GRP parts (front mask) annually.
- Clean attachments.
- Cleaning the wheel housings and rims with a water hose.
IMPORTANT: Do not direct the water jet directly at seals and ventilation grilles. - Remove rain stripes from the edges of the roof, under the windows and from the exterior decor. TIP: The rain stripes can be removed with suitable, solvent-free agents from the accessory stores.
- Checking the exterior walls for damage.
- Thorough cleaning of the glass panes in the cab area.
TIP: For a particularly good result, wash the glass panes with water after cleaning and rub dry with a leather cloth; glass cleaner can be used for dirt residues that are difficult to remove. - Thorough cleaning of the plastic windows and plastic parts.
IMPORTANT: Plastic windows and plastic parts must not be cleaned with normal glass cleaner, as this can cause stress cracks and the surfaces can become blind.
TIP: For a particularly good result, clean the synthetic windows and parts with a solvent-free agent and then rinse with water. - Remove any flash rust from the paint and plastic parts.
TIP: It is best to use an acid-free rust film remover for this purpose.
VEHICLE TECHNOLOGY REVIEW
- Checking the voltage of the batteries, recharging if necessary
- Replace antifreeze in windscreen wiper reservoir with summer windscreen cleaner
IMPORTANT: Mixing summer and winter cleaner can clog the windscreen washer system. - Check vehicle and engine fluids
- Check components for function, switch on main battery switch if present, check all electrical systems (inside and outside), especially indicators, brake lights, tail lights and parking lights.
- Remove the winter cover of the refrigerator ventilation grille (if present).
- Checking the tyres (tyre pressure, tread depth, retightening the wheel nuts, checking the spare wheel)
- Checking the dates for inspection, TÜV test, leak and service inspection, gas test and chassis service
